One of our school aims is that:
Children have an excellent awareness of the wider world, of different religions, cultures and societies and how they fit into them. They work with and understand children from other schools and backgrounds than themselves.
This area is a particular focus for our school development plan, so I am delighted that as part of the Y1 and Y2 topic on Festivals the teachers have been able to incorporate a visit to the Gujarat Hindu Society Mandir Temple in Preston on Wednesday 9th December. The children were welcomed into the temple with a traditional bindi mark on their foreheads and, as is customary, they had to take off their shoes. The children learnt about the different Gods which Hindu people pray to and saw shrines devoted to them. Our pupils recognised many of the Gods from their class work this term. The children enjoyed looking at the ornately decorated ceilings of the temple. At the end of the session the children were led in a short session of yoga breathing and using some of the instruments used in Hindu worship. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the visit and supported their understanding of people from other faiths which is part of our R.E. Curriculum.
